Historical Overview

The Police Museum opened its doors in 1908 as the Crime Museum on the Ferenc József Square front of the capital's police headquarters as a private institution. By the 1940s, the constantly growing collection had nearly 10,000 objects. The main material is II. Unfortunately, it was almost completely destroyed during World War II. After its reorganization in the 1950s and 1960s, the institution received its operating license in 1967 as a national museum. Since 1999, the Police Museum at Mosonyi utca 5 has welcomed those interested in the history of the police and forensics, and its permanent exhibitions have been completely renewed in the last two years.

The police barracks on Mosonyi Street were completed by November 1886 based on the plans of József Pucher, and were able to accommodate a total of 500 policemen and 120 horses. The building complex - which also housed the former police headquarters - was designed and built specifically to serve police purposes. Although the range of tasks performed has expanded significantly nowadays, the building still performs similar functions today as when it was built.
