The Castle Museum of Esztergom, a Jewel of the Danube Bend
Nestled among picturesque hills on the right bank of the Danube, the Castle Museum of Esztergom rises proudly above the river on the Castle Hill. This historic site witnessed the birth, marriage, and coronation of Hungary’s first monarch, King Saint Stephen. It was here, a thousand years ago, that the Hungarian state and church were founded, and for centuries, this place served as the heart of the Kingdom of Hungary.
Within Hungary’s first royal palace, visitors can explore walls that are in places over 800 years old, offering a glimpse into an invaluable historical legacy in all its grandeur. Thanks to extensive restoration work in recent years, the once battle-worn and time-ravaged walls once again reflect the former glory of the castle.
Guests can admire the one-of-a-kind Royal Chapel, and from the lookout tower of the White Tower, a breathtaking panorama awaits. Visitors can also discover the everyday life of people from centuries past in the castle’s historic kitchen and cistern room. And of course, no castle would be complete without a dungeon and the grand Knights’ Hall. Inside the halls, gold water vessels, spice shelves, swords, broadswords, shields, clay grenades, muskets, and even full suits of knight’s armor await the eyes of curious onlookers.
The Castle Museum can be visited independently on June 21, 2025, until 11:00 PM.
After that time, we will only be admitting guests who have registered for one of the following programs:
- “Guided Tour with Headlamp”
- “What Did King Béla III Eat Here?” — an interactive presentation for adults.
In front of the castle gate, visitors will find traditional Hungarian delights such as lángos, kürtőskalács, refreshing drinks, and other gourmet treats.
