The castle in the romantic style was built between 1880-1885 based on the plans of architect Meinig Arthur, commissioned by Hungary's Prime Minister and the first Foreign Minister of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Count Gyula Andrássy. The count overseeing the plans was inspired by the castles of the Loire Valley. The asymmetrically massed, historicizing building stands in a large park extending to the Tisza's oxbow lake. The artistic value of the building is significantly enhanced by the fact that in 1910, the Andrássy dining room designed by Rippl-Rónai was relocated here, which, with its magnificent stained glass window by Miksa Róth, is one of the main attractions of the castle.
