László Vass – Honoured Citizen of Veszprém, Collector and Master Shoemaker
László Vass is well known to lovers of culture in Veszprém and beyond. A distinguished collector of international renown, his contemporary art collection has enriched the cultural life of the city for over two decades.
As a master shoemaker, Lűászló Vass founded his Budapest-based workshop nearly fifty years ago. Today, Vass Shoes is considered a benchmark of excellence in traditional handmade footwear and is recognised among the leading artisanal shoemaking brands in the international fashion world.
In 2022, under the care of the House of Arts Veszprém, a new gallery space was opened within the Modern Art Gallery – László Vass Collection: the CIPŐTÁR (Shoe Gallery). This unique exhibition space showcases classic footwear designs and offers insight into the disappearing art of bespoke shoemaking. Visitors are invited to explore the intricate techniques and expert craftsmanship that go into creating high-quality footwear using traditional methods — skills still relevant in contemporary fashion.
Of particular interest is the opportunity to visit both the contemporary art collection and the shoemaking exhibition under one roof. The life and work of László Vass stand as an inspiring example for those who are passionate about culture and committed to preserving values. His story demonstrates how dedication, skill, and integrity can lead not only to excellence in one’s profession, but also to the cultivation of a meaningful relationship with high art and cultural heritage.
