Photojournalists in Japan / guided tours
Different location: Dubniczay Palace: Castle Gallery, D2, Vár utca 29.
During his travels in Japan, Veszprém-based photographer Bálint Kovács chose an unconventional path for documenting his experiences — one that diverged from the typical tourist gaze. The exhibition The Thousand Faces of Japan – At the Border of Tradition and Modernity takes visitors on a captivating visual journey to the easternmost edge of Asia. Alongside Kovács’s photographs, the viewer is accompanied by journalist and friend Bálint Hajas, whose unconventional travelogue-style commentaries guide us from the bustling heart of Tokyo to the foot of Mount Fuji and even to the pearl divers of Mikomoto Island.
The Colours of Japan exhibition and accompanying publication are born from a unique fusion of the photo book and the travel guide. It is not a traditional Baedeker, nor a list of online travel tips, nor a breezy tourist manual. Instead, it is a personal, creative exploration of Honshu — Japan’s largest island — through the eyes of Csaba Toroczkai photojournalist and Bernadett Grászli art historian. The photographs capture not only scenic beauty but also the quiet rhythms of everyday life. The accompanying text, connecting to the theme of water, delves into topics such as nature, tradition, creative expression, and culinary pleasure. It is a collection of impressions, based on personal encounters, intended to inspire others to seek authentic experiences and meaningful travel.
