Get to Know the Past of Szigetszentmiklós!
Discover the rich history of Szigetszentmiklós from ancient times to the era of the world wars! On the Night of Museums, our permanent exhibition is open to visitors — with or without a guided tour (available in English).
The permanent exhibition of the Local History Collection presents the history of Szigetszentmiklós in chronological order, from archaeological findings up to the period of World War II. After the prehistoric animals, visitors can explore the burial customs and everyday objects of the area’s first inhabitants. These are followed by relics from the Roman and Migration Periods, and then artifacts left behind by the Hungarian residents of Szigetszentmiklós, which has a history of over 750 years.
In the middle room, a kitchen is furnished in turn-of-the-century style, while the street-facing room features a traditional “clean room.” Visitors can also learn about the customs and clothing of Szigetszentmiklós residents — from military recruitment and blue aprons to traditional wedding customs. On the porch of the peasant house, you’ll find a unique brick collection and Hungary’s only known heart-shaped painted gravestones. In the 70-square-meter shed behind the building, visitors can explore agricultural tools and the instruments of many local artisans.
The exhibition is open from 5 PM to 10 PM! Admission is free!
