At the time of our story, the ruler of the country is King Matthias (Mátyás), who, in an attempt to stabilise the country's financial situation, strives to mint high-quality gold forints and issue silver coins of high value. Not everyone is happy with this consistent monetary policy, and some people are even guilty of counterfeiting, which is punishable by death.
On an unusually frosty day in the March of 1489, a merchant's cart from Lübeck falls into a ditch near Bártfa, and the two passengers, a father and his son, are seriously injured. The wounded father is cared for and taken into the home of the widowed herbalist, Zsófia, while his son is placed in the house of the Bártfa medical orderly – who is also the executioner - Mihály. The strangers arouse the town's curiosity, and when a terrible murder is discovered almost immediately after their arrival, the town’s sense peace is shaken to the core and mistrust of them grows. The murder is not enough, counterfeit money also turns up in Bártfa. Mihály and Zsófia start an investigation to find out exactly what happened and who the culprit might be.
