Budapest Bár concert
Budapest Bar is an intoxicating cocktail of Gypsy virtuosity infused with rock'n'roll energy. The wildly popular five-piece Gypsy band teams up with a rotating roster of singers from the rock, underground and jazz scene, swinging between the sultry and rollicking. They invoke the spirit of big-city Europe’s golden age of cabaret, the 1920s-1950s.
When bandleader Robert Farkas put together the Budapest Bár band in 2007, he wanted to create a first-class ensemble that would exemplify Central European urban Gypsy music at its best, rather than what had become its commonplace kitschy-nostalgia worst. The result is a professional music group at the heart of a tight-knit collaborative miscellany of performers that transcends ethnic, musical and generational boundaries.
Bandleader Robert Farkas (violin, guitar) created Budapest Bar with the intention to shift Hungarian gypsy music away from its reputation of kitsch and nostalgia. In doing so, Farkas has created a contemporary sound that appeals to a young audience as well as to the musical aficionado. The singers, who joined the gypsy band in Hungary, are the crème de la crème of the Hungarian rock, underground and jazz scene. The music is transcribed and arranged for the 21st century without any electronic manipulation – enjoyable for young and old alike, their shows are a real intercultural and intergenerational experience.
